M expands a citywide manhunt into a tense study of fear, surveillance, and collective judgment. Fritz Lang uses sound and silence as active parts of the story, letting an offscreen noise or repeated tune carry as much weight as an image. The film keeps shifting our position among police, criminals, crowds, and the hunted man, refusing the comfort of a simple moral distance.
